In today’s world cyber hacking and computer safety has a huge impact on our lives. Our whole worlds – work, school, social and financial – revolve around our devices. Keeping your devices safe should be your top priority to protect yourself and others. We’ve compiled some tips to help you get you on the right track to a safer computer.
1. Password Management
Setting up, maintaining and updating passwords should always be kept private and constant. There are several password management programs that can help you keep your passwords manageable and secure. If you’re not using these programs, here are some general tips on password creation:
• Don’t write passwords down or share with anyone
• Long passwords are highly recommended (20 characters or more)
• Update passwords regularly
• Use a mixture of characters – Numbers, Symbols, Upper Case and Lower Case letters
2. Keep software up to date
Always install the recommended software and security updates on your computer. These updates are very important as they remove dangerous bugs from applications and keep all software from crashing. Try turning on your automatic updates for your operating system; keep your browser plug-ins, third party apps and your drivers up to date. You should also use web browsers that receive regular security updates, like Chrome and Firefox.
3. Never leave your devices unattended or unlocked
Physical security on your devices is just as important as cyber security. Any device you own should be physically secured and locked so that if you were to leave it unattended, it cannot be stolen or taken. Laptops, tablets and desktops can all be physically locked to an immovable surface using specialized locks purchased.
4. Be careful of what you click – Links, Phishing Scams & Advertisements
Always be aware of all the links, attachments and websites you visit. Any links, attachments or bold advertisements you receive by email that look suspicious, should be avoided. Once opened, these links can put your computer in serious jeopardy without you even knowing.
Phishing scams are also very dangerous, as many cyber criminals can use these to gain your personal information; like your passwords, I.D number and financial information; and can use it against you. These are usually sent through emails, texts or social media. Ignore and delete any suspicious messages received asking for your credentials.
5. Back up your data
You should regularly create backups on all your computers and devices. Backing up to external hard drives or onto a cloud backup service is very important. This is the only guaranteed way to recover your data if any accident happens or you fall victim to a security incident.
6. Anti-virus protection
All your devices should have anti-virus software installed. This software should always be kept up to date. Make sure you install a well-known and trusted anti-virus program.
By following these steps and initiating each one, you will be on your way to a safer, more secure device, giving you peace of mind and one less worry. Protecting your very valuable computer, tablet or phone is not optional, but essential!
